Sara Update 18 months

Hi Everyone,

Boy it has been a long time since we sent out one of these. Where to begin...

Sara is 18 months old. It is hard to believe that we will have a two year old by the end of this year. Sara just gets better and better. So here's a snapshot of what's been going on.

Sara turned 1 on October 3, 2001. We had a very small family dinner on her actual birthday. She did not like the feeling of the frosting on her fingers until she tasted it. Then she understood and a new world opened up to her.

We had a small party for her at the beginning of November with family and friends. It was fun and Sara is still using many of the gifts she got.

October, November and December were months where Sara focused on perfecting skills she already had. She was walking with more confidence, and liked to run, climb, step, and dance. She made all kinds of progress (running faster, climbing higher, dancing with her own steps instead of copying mom, etc.).

January was where the rocket took off. Sara started talking and getting all four molars together. Sara's first word was deh deh which meant doggie. It was the first time she put a word to something and knew that it meant something. Her first actual word was also in January - puppy.

So January, February, March and now April are focused on talking. Her vocabulary is growing at a fast pace. Here are a few of the things she can say: puppy, papa, mommy, cookie, shirt, potty, shoes, socks, diaper (which she calls de de), Cleo, Rachie (our neighbor's four year old), Bruce, Oatmeal (which she calls okolo), broccoli (which she calls bralalala), carrot, telephone (which she calls hello), yeah, no, please, thank you, bye-bye, ear, hi, nose, eye, banana (which she calls nanana), fish, bath (which she calls ba), ball, and various animal sounds (moo, baaa, ssss, quack-quack, woof, meaow, oink, ribit, grrr, roar).

Sara will answer questions (what does the Count from Sesame Street say, answer ah, ah, ah,) and can tell you yes or no. Sara will follow directions such as let's take a bath (one of her very favorite activities), go get a diaper, bring this to mommy or papa, bring me your shoes.

Sara knows parts of her body. She just learned knees but she also knows nose, eye, ear, eyebrow, head, hair, neck, chin, cheek, hand, finger, foot, toes, and the all favorite belly.

Sara is enjoying her impact on the world and likes to turn on lights, change tv channels, move things, open, close, lift, stack, nest and feed Cleo.

Sara can bring a book that she wants you to read, climb on the couch to watch Sesame Street, and turn on the radio and dance.

Sara creates disorder: pulls toilet paper off the roll, pulls towels out of drawers, takes clothes out of the laundry bin, spreads hangars around the room and empties.

Sara also creates order: she will close doors and drawers, especially if someone leaves them open, throw things away and can survey a room, see what's out of place and make it right.

Sara is starting to understand possession. She will point to items that belong to Victoria and say mama. She will point to items that belong to Alan and say papa.

Sara has walks. She will squat walk, tiptoe, run, side-walk, walk slowly, quickly and the all-cute saunter.

That's the update. Take care and check out the newish pictures at www.alanandvictoria.com

Love to all, Alan and Victoria
